Instagram è il social che più mi permette di esprimere quello che faccio e che mi piace fare: viaggiare e condividere i miei viaggi. Sì, anche io prima di postare una foto sul mio profilo controllo se ci sta bene con il resto del feed, fissa personale o regola tacita dettata da blogger e fotografi che sia.
Non solo condivido le mie avventure in giro per il mondo, ma mi piace leggere e scoprire quelle degli altri. Quante volte avete iniziato da Instagram per trovare qualcosa da vedere durante un viaggio? Io ho intere raccolte di post salvati divisi per città o paese che sono stati utili e lo saranno in futuro!
Instagram è utile ai fini del viaggio e ti permette di scoprire luoghi nuovi, ristoranti, bar e punti di osservazione. Finché quei ristoranti con le lucine e le piante e quel punto di osservazione non diventano vecchi e ripetitivi. Ogni singolo blogger, influencer, chiamatelo come vi pare, posta quella foto che viene ripostata a sua volta da mega-account come Beautiful Destinations e da lì si creano questi Instagram spots o posti instagrammabili dove la fila per scattare una foto è più lunga di quella alle Poste il 2 del mese.
Un esempio lampante è questo posto a Bali, l’Handara Gate:

Anni fa ero affascinato da questi luoghi, ora invece ho zero interesse nel visitarli.
Non fraintendetemi. Sono molto belli, ma mi sembra di aver già visto tutto e di sapere già cosa aspettarmi: una fila di gente che su Instagram non vedi, in attesa di scattare la foto perfetta con vestiti lunghi e capelli al vento. Non c’è niente di male. Anzi, sono posti iconici oramai, quindi è più che giusto farci un salto. Ma dal punto di vista puro del viaggiatore io ho perso la curiosità e la voglia di andarci.
All’inizio dell’articolo ci sono due foto del castello di Neuschwanstein, vicino Monaco. Per godermi la vista che vedete nella foto di destra mi sono arrampicato su una roccia isolata dove ho trovato un posticino lontano da tutti. La foto di sinistra è la fila per salire sul ponte sul quale si fa a gomitate anche solo per vedere il castello per 30 secondi.
È come quando ti spoilerano una serie tv e di dicono che il personaggio principale muore.
Per i viaggiatori Instagram è un’arma a doppio taglio: da una parte aiuta a trovare ispirazione, dall’altra non fa che incrementare il flusso di gente e contribuire all’overtourism. Sfinisce e scoraggia i viaggiatori a visitare certi posti.
Come ha cambiato il mio modo di viaggiare Instagram? I posti che prima avrei considerato per una visita, sono ora alla fine della mia lista. Il lago di Braies, Phuket, Bali non mi attirano più.
Instagram mi ha tolto la curiosità che avevo per molte bellezze naturali e angoli ormai poco nascosti.
Per ora mi limito a fare scroll, tap e swipe. Forse quella curiosità ritornerà.
]]>Yesterday I’ve stumbled upon a hilarious account, Socality Barbie, that makes fun of all those PNW young wanderers. I’ll talk about it at the end of this article, BUT FIRST let me take a selfie let’s start with the basics:
WHAT’S THE PNW AND WHAT ITS HIPSTERS DO
PNW is the acronym for Pacific Northwest, an area in North America that includes Oregon, Washington state and part of British Columbia, Canada. And it gave birth to an #authentic lifestyle right on Instagram. This adventurous way of living takes in account photos of mountains, specifically the Rocky Mountains (“Rockies”), lakes such as the famous Moraine Lake in BC and roads and bridges surrounded by green pines and fog.
The popular Rowena Crest, also called #thatpnwroad, is one of the most photographed view points… and just by looking at the photos, we can’t blame hipsters for it:
Another oh-so-cool place to take photos of is the Vance Creek Bridge, a bridge now closed because of the great affluence during the last years (and maybe because it’s dangerous, just sayin’). But this hasn’t stopped the wanderers from adventuring there:

HOW TO BE A PNW HIPSTER
Do you really want to be one of them? Are you ready to spend Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter and your mom’s birthday with some peaks ‘n lakes?
- Spend 90% of your time on the mountains
- Spend the remaining 10% taking pictures of your Daniel Wellington
- Make coffee on the mountains
- Read Kinfolk magazine
- Wear enormous hats while looking at mountains
- Wrap yourself up with a Native American blanket while looking at the mountains
- Start a business with your graphic designer-photographer-friend. Of any kind: a company that makes leather mug sleeves, or a clothing line like Wish You Were Northwest. Just remember to use words like “Donuts” “Mountains” and “Coffee”
- Get a feature on @folkmagazine
- Camp. Every day. Every month. Christmas included.
- Go kayaking
- Be #grateful, #blessed and #thankful for the place you live in
- Wear leather boots
- Bring a huge backpack but not one of those Northface backpacks. A Herschel-kind-of-backpack can do the job.
But what’s up with the account I was talking about at the beginning? It’s a parody account called @socalitybarbie that takes the PNW lifestyle to another level: the Barbie level. Captions, hashtags and photos are amazingly curated by some genius and they perfectly recreate the hipster-vibe of the Pacific Northwest:
